Diaspora is a role-playing game that uses the FATE system to deliver a hard science-fiction framework for adventure, where you build the setting on top of the basic, gritty axioms of the universe: everything is bigger than you are. You will pilot spaceraft driven by fusion torches that light the night sky towards rifts in the fabric of space that shift you between a small number of lost worlds, each with thousands of years of history. And it's all yours.

Although Diaspora is based on FATE, it is a complete game requiring no other purchases to play. You will need dice, pen, paper, and friends, but all the rules you need are right here.

A Penny for My Thoughts
Paul Tevis

Two women and a man, all dressed in white jumpsuits, sit around a table with a bowl of pennies in its center. Each of them has a small stack of pennies and a printed form. In front of the older woman sits a scrap of paper with the words "a taffy stretching machine" written on it.

"... and my father looked down at me and said, 'If you don't want to ride the roller coaster, you don't have to. You can wait here in the candy shop while your brother and I go,'" says the older woman. "I was scared." As she speaks, the remembered terror creeps into her voice.

Her expression suddenly goes blank. She turns to the man. "What did I do or say then?" she asks, offering him the single penny in front of her.

The man considers for a moment, his brow furrowed. Staring at her, he replies, "You said, 'No, I want to come with you.'"

She turns to the younger woman. "Or was it..." she begins, offering the same penny.

"You stayed there in the candy shop, chewing your taffy," the other woman says.

She pauses before speaking again. "Yes, I remember now. I said, 'No, I want to come with you.'" She hands her penny to the man. "And I had a fantastic time. It was so thrilling, so wonderful. That's when I knew what I wanted to do with my life. And that is what I remember."

She smiles as she writes on her sheet of paper, "When I think of taffy stretching machines, I remember how I discovered what I wanted to do with my life. I'd never felt such a sense of purpose before." After she finishes, she takes a penny from the bowl.

"A penny for my thoughts," she says.

Montsegur 1244
Frederik J. Jensen

Montsegur 1244 - A story game about burning for your belief.

Do you renounce your heretic beliefs and do you wish to receive the forgiveness of the merciful Father?

In March 1244 this question was posed to several hundred Cathars. They had surrendered to the army that had besieged the castle of Montsegur for more than nine months. More than two hundred answered no, and thereby chose death by fire. Who were these people that chose to die for their belief?

In Montsegur 1244 the players collaborate to create a story about who these people were. Each player takes on the role of one of the besieged Cathars who will face the choice between life and faith.

A game for 3-6 players. Duration 3-6 hours.

Slasher Flick
Cynthia Celeste Miller

Slasher Flick is a role-playing game that brings all the thrills of slasher movies from the screen to the tabletop. It's not a universal game that can easily be used for other genres. Every rule is designed with the sole purpose of capturing all the tropes and nuances of the source material.

Players take on the roles of potential victims for the psycho killer. This may be overly blunt, but that's the truth of the matter. It's very, very possible that any given character will be stabbed, strangled, eviscerated, decapitated, chopped into pieces or otherwise disposed of by the time the game is over. That's okay though, as each player controls not only a primary character (representing one of the characters in the movies that the audience knows will either survive or be one of the last to die) but can also share the secondary characters (representing lesser characters that the audience knows will be slain during the movie) with the other players.

So get ready to go to a cursed camp or babysit some kids on a dark and stormy night. After all, that noise you're hearing is just the wind. Isn't it?

Weighing in at a hefty 323 pages, S7S offers an upgrade to your PDQ experience with the PDQ Sharp (PDQ#) system, fully realized and detailed with plenty of examples and packed with swashbuckling action. ...Maybe some dude from youth group talked you into boosting a case of motor oil, but now your cousin is dead in a swamp and you killed him. Maybe you and your girlfriend figured you could scare your wife into a divorce, but things went pear-shaped and now a gang of cranked-up Mexicans with latex gloves and a pit bull are looking for you.

It seemed like such a good idea at the time.

Fiasco is inspired by cinematic tales of small time capers gone disastrously wrong - inspired by films like Blood Simple, Fargo, The Way of the Gun, Burn After Reading, and A Simple Plan. You'll play ordinary people with powerful ambition and poor impulse control. There will be big dreams and flawed execution. It won't go well for them, to put it mildly, and in the end it will probably all go south in a glorious heap of jealousy, murder, and recrimination. It's designed to be played in a single session, usually around two and a half hours, with no prep.

Chronica Feudalis: A Game of Imagined Adventure in Medieval Europe
Jeremy Keller

What was once lost has now been found...

After hundreds of years of obscurity, a manuscript from the 12th century has recently been discovered that details the rules for a role-playing game of historical proportions. Envisioned and enjoyed by medieval monks of some long-forgotten priory, their game will take you back in time to portray the brave knights, cunning outlaws, determined clerics, bold peasants, and brash barons of their age. Explore the British isles and the European continent as they were in the feudal era. Turn the tides of wars and scheme for political power in old kingdoms. Join a crusade, survive the inquisition, become the monarch that the annals of time forgot. History is now yours for the re-telling.

Renowned medievalist and RPG scholar Jeremy Keller has assembled this manuscript from its scattered fragments and translated it from its Middle English script. The text has been lovingly interpreted and re-forged into a game system ready to run the historical adventures you have always imagined the Middle Ages could be full of. Dubbed Chronica Feudalis, the system allows for characters that range from peasants to princes and gives them the tools to set forth on daring adventures, engaging in combat, parley, subterfuge and chases.

Ribbon Drive
Joe McDonald

In Ribbon Drive, we collectively create a story about a road trip. We do this in the comfort of a living room, over the course of 3-5 hours. We each create a character, one of the people going on this road trip. These characters are our individual jobs; each of us will roleplay one character's decisions and actions. We'll share the responsibility of narrating the obstacles and scenery that comes up all around out characters. Ribbon Drive creates stories about letting go on the open road, and we all work to both further and complicate this agenda during the game. It draws inspirations from road movies like Wristcutters, Everything Is Illuminated, y tu Mama Tambien, Little Miss Sunshine, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and Thelma & Louise (and, to a lesser extent, Two Lane Blacktop, The Doom Generation and Wild At Heart). Our ultimate goal is to create a thought-provoking, meaningful experience. We let the music guide us. We let the road throw us curves. As our characters, we rethink our attachment to the future.

Last Train Out of Warsaw
Jason Morningstar

Last Train Out Of Warsaw is a short, focused roleplaying game using Matthijs Holter's Archipelago II as a rules engine.

Set on the eve of the German encirclement of Warsaw in 1939, this game casts players in the roles of some of the passengers on the very last train out of that doomed city. Play progresses through a fixed series of scenes as the train flees the horrors of war towards safety in Romania. The train journey is fraught with incidents both external - a German air attack, a bandit raid, a station full of Poles desperate to get on the train - and internal - each passenger has issues and secrets that will be revealed through play and which may quite literally derail the escape.

The Drifter's Escape
Ben Lehman

The Drifter's Escape is an anthology of short stories and a role-playing game. Like most anthologies, there is a unified theme to the entries: they are all about the role of the American drifter, and his place in the American landscape. The stories and the game do not intersect except thematically. There are seven stories, ranging in length from three pages to nineteen, and they are all written by my brother, Jake Lehman. There is one role-playing game, and it is written by me, Ben Lehman.

The game is for three or more players (the largest group which I have played it with is 7, although it scales past that) of similar age and maturity. The game takes 1-3 hours to play to completion, about 20 minutes of which is set-up. If you eat an early dinner, it can be played after dinner and before you go to sleep.

In the game, one player takes the role of the Drifter, someone who is coming into a new place, where they know no one, with the intent to leave rather than settle down. The other players take the role of the forces (The Devil and The Man) trying to get the Drifter to submit to their ownership of his life and soul. At the start of the game, The Devil and The Man control everyone but the Drifter. As the game is played, some people might redeem themselves and leave their control.

A recent player of the game described it as "a very quiet, very powerful experience." My play of the game has felt the same. The stories that the game produces are about ordinary people and their ordinary lives, but despite (or because of) that they are engrossing and often deeply affecting.

The Black Spot
Mark Silcox

The Black Spot is a storytelling game in which players act out the kinds of terrifying tales told in horror films like those of Sam Raimi, George A. Romero and Wes Craven. The ultimate fate of every player's character is determined via draws from a special deck of cards. Most of the rest of what happens in each story is left up to the players' imaginations.

Will Gretchen, the pensive cheerleader, outrun the Mad Slasher of Middletown Gorge? Will Hans, the happy-go-lucky drifter, ever discover the dark secret of that abandoned coal mine off Route 67? Will the passengers of Omega Airlines Flight 099 escape the desert island before awakening its grim and bloodthirsty protector? The answers to all such questions depend upon you, the player, with perhaps just the tiniest nudge from the hand of fate.
